Chess began its roots in India without the central piece on the board. The queen was introduced when the game continued to be adapted as it traveled throughout the world. When the game arrived to Europe, Isabelle Queen of Spain came into the picture as a strong force to deal with. Thus, there was a purpose for a queen piece. The piece that takes the spot next to the king and helps protect him was the rightful spot to belong to the queen. Most queens took over for the king for most decisions, especially social and palace related topics. They also took over the kingdom when the king was absent in some way (sickness, war, or death). This only became apparent of the position when the game reached Europe, which would make sense because that was where this only happened as a part of noble life. Sure, there were empresses over on the eastern side of Asia, but they weren’t as strong in their role.
This brings up the thought about how women or other powers can alter gameplay throughout history. Where are some other games (video games, board games, physical games) where the game, rules, or roles are changed to something completely different based on the historical context? Looking through the possible options provided, I would think that softball was created to become a main form of ball game for women to play, since baseball could be seen as too harsh for the women physique. Now, I don’t know much about softball, but I do know from watching the basics, it is very similar to baseball. I also notice that though it is predominately women who play the sport, men have been known to play it as well.
Another thought is how we are reading about board games that are actually more spectated than we had come to grow up thinking. I played chess usually with one other person and no one else around. When viewing pictures of these other games, there are many spectators. Some of the games can be seen as gods playing it, such as last week’s readings.
Continuing with this week’s reading, I did find the examples of kings and queens taking on the chess pieces roles quite plentiful and intellectually pleasing. I felt there was a lack of true connection to the point of a queen piece’s coming to fruition. This is where I lost interest in the reading and found it rather hard to continue reading. Therefore, I stayed with the thought of where else have I seen the transition of games adapting to the times they are played.
