Like I had said in class, my name is Patrick and I am an Asian History major as well as a games (and film) enthusiast. As a result, one of my main hobbies is critical discourse involved with games, narrative, etc., and my usual partner in crime in this regard is Griffin. However, I am always open to discussion and find a lot of satisfaction in helping people familiarize themselves with new material or articulate thoughts in a more concrete manner.
I got into video games when I was very young, probably around 3 or 4, with the old Cyan (creator of Myst) titles ‘The Manhole’ and ‘Cosmic Osmo’. From there, I’ve played games consistently my whole life, which has (fortunately) paid off in me being able to compete at a ‘professional level’ with a variety of games and game types. I’ve also dabbled somewhat frequently in game development, starting around the age of 14 or so by creating maps and game modes for Warcraft 3 with a friend of mine. While I’ve created and even shared a decent amount of Mods, I’m ashamed to say I’ve never actually finished a game, although I plan to change that soon. This hobby has lent me a lot of experience in understanding games and game design, which I hope I will be able to share with the class.
Edit: I should probably also include some of my gaming tastes. My favorite game is Demon’s Souls, which for separate reasons I also consider to be the best game ever made. Honorable mentions for personal favorites include the excellent hidden gems Deadly Premonition, Escape Velocity: Nova, and Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, as well as the classics Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Banjo-Kazooie.
As a bonus, the game I’m personally best at is Pokemon, I have competed several times in international (non-Nintendo) tournaments, having placed 2nd in one and was on the winning team in the game’s effective ‘World Cup’.
