Change of Color

BoRT- Palette Swapping

I’m going to do my best to answer these questions based off of Super Smash Bros which I used to play all the time when I was younger. Palette swapping is simply changing the color or technique of a character. For example, some people might not like the red colored character but love the purple one, and they can connect more with that character. It might also be useful when two people play against each other in a fighting game and both pick the same character. In this way, it may prevent confusion. In terms of effectiveness, game creators would be able to just create one character and then simply make them different colors, which would seem like it would save time and money. According to one of my friends, it isn’t JUST color that can be changed, though.

A character can get new moves tweaked to create an almost new character. Perhaps the red and green character are the same, but they might have different moves. Another example that may be the same is in the Sims. They all look exactly the same, but we decide subtle changes like hair color, clothes, and personality. I’m not sure if we expect more out of games because of the pixel quality, but I’m sure there are those who desire for more differentiation and those who like the more retro vintage character styles. Since I no longer play Smash, or any video games, really, I don’t have a solid opinion on the matter. BUT, I feel like I would lean more toward the classic style of characters with the palette swapping. I enjoy the simplicity in games, and a basic change of color is enough to make me content.
