In my last short take I wrote about an article that was about combining craft beer and board games. In this article, the topic of board game cafes are discussed. I absolutely love the idea of board game cafes. Explaining that today’s society is gravitating toward the “nerd culture”, is representative in the rising success of these establishments. Three cafes that showcase this are , “Side Quest in Lakewood, Malted Meeple in Hudson and the soon to open Tabletop Café in Ohio..games that used to be relegated to home basements out of fear of bodily harm now are being played very much out in the open.” Having a social outlet that does not involve being on an iphone or computer is beneficial to all who walk in the door.
Board game cafes allow for strangers to become friends and stress to be shed from a long days work. Each cafe carries 200-900 board game titles, ranging from boisterous laugh inducing games to more cerebral and reserved ones. Food and drinks are also available to purchase in these cafes to provide sustenance to that 5 hour Risk game you might be playing. I hope that more board game cafes start to emerge around the nation, as I think everyone needs a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, especially if if involves staring at a computer all day or talking on the phone for hours. It also provides a door for those who are more video game based to bring those games to the table and to take a breather from their living room (or to shower). Although these cafes are emerging in large city centers, hopefully small towns like Bozeman will catch on as well.
