Team work is an essential part of any sport or game. Even sports such as cross country or track, which involve competing against others as well as yourself heavily incorporate aspects of teamwork. I played water polo, swam, and ran cross country in high school and still try to involve myself in those sports today. Without having a communicative and congenial relationship with your teammates, the game just does not work. Even though I have never played a video game that involved competing against someone on the other side of the screen, teamwork is teamwork regardless of what form of play is occurring. Some of my best friends have been from sports teams I have been apart of. When you are involved in something such as a sport or a game, those who you are surrounded by share the exact same interest, consequently fostering solid relationships. In water polo, for example, if my team and I were scrimmaging during practice, we would be playing against each other- pulling each other underwater, kicking each other, and being competitively aggressive with one another. This was not because we hated each other, it was because of the mechanics of the game itself. We knew that a punch thrown, or a torn swimsuit was not out of hatred, it was the nature of the game. In order to win our matches against other schools, we had to practice with each other like we would against a rival team. I’m sure those that play video games feel the same sense of community as those who play sports.
