We have talked about the importance of Everest climbing commercialization and how it has benefited the sherpa community of Nepal. However, this article explores the very real and problematic issues that surround the incredibly dangerous work that Sherpas undertake while working on Everest. Faced with the very real possibility of death, or serious injury these Sherpa porters have become somewhat of an expendable workforce facing the most dangerous aspects of working on Everest while not fully receiving the insurance and coverage they need financial when they do become injured or worse. This article explores how Sherpas are unfairly compensated for their dangerous work and how poorly they are insured for the work that they do. It also explored how injuries and death can completely ruin a family financially and how this problem is being fixed
Here is the link to the article and I would encourage everyone to read it as it contains some eye-opening details about some very relevant topics that we have discussed as a class this semester.
