My paper topic is going to be a history of pollution and the growth of tourism on Mount Everest from mid 1900’s to now. From what I was finding pollution on Everest is improving but was major concern during the 1980s. My most useful article to make a lot of major points will be Vanity, Pollution and Death on Mt. Everest (which I posted as a link for this week) but I found a lot of science based articles on environmental degradation like, Growth of Tourism in Nepal’s Everest Region: Impact on the Physical Environment and Structure of Human Settlements. I’m also using Mountains as an Existential Resource, Expression in Religion, Environment and Culture that Jamling Tenzing Norgay (Tenzing Norgay’s son) wrote as a primary source of how tourism is affecting Sherpa culture and their image of Everest.
